How Awful!!

February's FMQ Challenge is feathers.  This is HARD!!!  I thought I'd show you my progress rather than simply post my last attempt, which hopefully, is pretty good.  My O My do I need to practice.  I first drew out a feather design on paper with little arrows to help me know which direction to go.  Even my drawing is bad!  My first attempt with fabric on the right is pretty bad.  My feathers are too straight, my echo quilting is horrid.  Second attempt is not much better.  I'll practice more and post another before I post my final attempt.

  1. Sue - I think your feathers look good for first attempts. I took a class with the fabulous Diane Gaudynski and we did feathers all day long on a practice 'sandwich.' By the end of the day I was pretty happy with my feathers. One trick is to draw the 'spine' first on the fabric with chalk to give yourself a guideline. And also, think of your individual plumes as half a heart shape. Claudia W

  2. Yes, this is a lesson from Diane. She is soooo good! We do the spine line. I like the idea of thinking half hearts. Good tip, thanks!

  3. Great blog Sue! This complements your Picassa site (which I love!) beautifully! BTW - your feathers are 1000% better than mine!

  4. Hi Trish! Good to hear!!! Thanks! I was so tense stitching the feathers. Talked with a friend who is a beautiful FMQer, she suggested I put on mood music to help me relax. I usually work in a very quiet house, but I'm willing to try the mood music if it will help me get better at feathers and echo quilting.
